Ollie Allgrove Talk

Works for:
Passion Pictures

Ollie Allgrove

His job is he is an executive producer.

Ollie Algrove came into school on Monday to give us a talk on what it is like to make a music video in the industry and also what is important to make a music video perfect for the artists image. I found it very interesting to have some first hand insight from someone that has worked on big well known projects and in the business for a long time. One of the big questions we had for Ollie of course, what was the biggest success and project?

He replied that they in fact created all the animation for the Gorrilaz (band). This band used their image as illustrated characters for their full album up until their last release. This shows how successful it was. Although Ollie said it was quite a risky one considering the first debut from an artist in their video is for the audience to have a full presentation to what they are all about. So when creating animated character this could of been quite a big risk considering it could go easily wrong.

What important notes I took :

What do Passion Pictures do ? Represent :

  • VFX Artists
  • Producers
  • Directors
It is important for a music video to receive :
  • Hits
  • Controversy
  • Impact
The meaning of a collaboration is when the director of the video and artist exchange and create idea's. Ollie said it was very important to keep this trust and look after the artist. Some times because directors are on commission the artist, if they have worked with them before and had a good experience, will ask for the director to work with them again. What is important to keep in mind when creating a music video is a few main elements :
  • Makeup
  • Wardrobe
  • Performance
  • Set
All these elements will portray an artist to its audience, so it is important to get this spot on to what the artist wants to be viewed like, so then they speak directly to their ideal fans. Talking about shoot day Ollie gave an important quote to remember, 'Do not fix in post'. This means that you should get all you need on the shoot day and do not always rely on post production to fix something you could not do on the day of the shoot.

Sponsorship is something else that is quite important in the industry, for example Ollie told us that Adidas may pay ten thousand pounds just to have a shot (advertising) of a pair of their trainers.
