Saul Bass? Legend of Legends

Saul Bass, like Kyle Cooper was a graphic design artist. His work was at full boom in the 1960's and 1950's. Now he is so well respected and his style has been used and inspired many in such opening sequences such as 'Catch me if you can'.

Saul Bass has worked on big films such as Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' and Otto Preminger's 'Man with the Golden Arm'. Both opening sequences are very art based. His visions as I have notices use bold colors such a reds and oranges, purples and blacks etc. 

I could talk all about what Saul Bass has done but my favorite peace of Bass's work, which is the opening credits of 'Good fellas' by Martin Scorsese. The opening title sequence was very simple, as in it only used a black background and white writing, until the end of the sequence. I was very curious on whether Saul Bass's outlook on the opening sequence was included in Martin Scorcese

He designed for Alfred Hitchcock, and did his opening

This is one of the famous, successful and talented graphic design artists. He creates opening sequences for film and many other things. 

 

Se7ven Opening Sequence

 

I can safely say that this opening sequence drags you in, it makes shivers go up your spine. It displays the mood you are going to feel throughout the fantastic thriller. The start of this discussion has to talk about the text Cooper uses, it is almost looks like it is hand writing, but is rigid. The font almost looks like the letters have been scratched into the screen, which relates to torture which is what this film is mostly about. The strong and distinctive music as ell plays a massive part on the mood, it draws you into every single shot, makes you hooked but uneasy, wanting to turn away from the screen, yet you find yourself struggling to do so. It is loud and very powerful.

As for the shots themselves, they tell a story themselves. They are scary, like the shot of the young boys face being drawn on, the photograph, its is daunting.

The shot of the 'boys' face is scribbled, it makes the shot horrifying. Also it comes very fast so you it basically flashes quickly in your face.

American Horror Story : Season One Opening Sequence

When I first saw American Horror Stories title sequence, I thought it was genius. It instantly reminded me of Kyle Coopers work in Se7ven, and when I found out it was him I soon realized his style. I really love when Cooper does daunting and creepy work, he is genius at it.

The music is shocking, and sends you terrified even before the show has started. It is loud and has sounds that jump out to the audience aurally. The actual shots that are used also add to the show, by showing old fashioned children's photo's also let the audience know that whatever they witness is going to scare them.

The old fashioned photographs go up into flames, signifying death and chaos which is basically all  the this season is about. The dead animals and baby's in the jar also signify death, the death being preserved which is a major aspect of this season because it is all about a haunted house and the dead being preserved in this house.

Spider Man Opening Sequence

Cooper stays very close to whole idea of 'spider man' by using webs, which the viewer follows along, making the audience feel like a spider almost. The music is also very powerful, as it is big and represents as strong super hero.

By showing all the scenes, short clips, how they are entwined in the webs also shows the story of the character Peter Parker.

The blue theme throughout represents the characters blue and red suite, and also the spider he is bitten with.

By showing the shot of each actor, and beside their names, helps the audience be informed who is in the film, is more visual for possibly the younger generation watching (who is the largest audience category)

Our First Production Meeting

Discussing all our idea's was a long process. We all
felt quite strongly about them, and thought that 
it would be quite hard to let go of our ideas if the 
others were not happy. 
My idea however, about a women who wants to kill her 
husband across the dinner table has became the most 
popular. I wrote this before hand and felt very confident.

My Group has been decided

Our group was put together randomly and it finally worked out well. Although you could possibly be put with someone you do not see eye to eye with, thats how the movie business works. You do not work with your friends in the real world in most situations, so we all knew we had to just suck it up and deal with it. 

My two new partners?
  

Imogen, bubbly and kind. She has a lot idea's. I am sure she will be confident with creating everything together when it comes to the acting and camera work she knows what she is talking about. I will really enjoy working with her, hopefully we see eye to eye. 

Phoebe, great at drawing so she is going to all over those story boards. A like Immy, Phoebe has a lot of ideas so I hope that we will get on very well and we can come to a final decision on our idea together quickly and sufficiently.

Initial Idea 4

A girl is stumbling home, she is drunk and alone. Vulnerability is what I want to get across in the opening. She is trying to call someone and hail for cabs but nothing is going her way. She goes to message her friend which in the voicemail you learn that her friend has left her by accident. The message she sends after is "It's okay. Will walk home then, no free lifts." She starts walking home and goes by a small children's swing park in the dark. The camera moves in the swing park, filming the girl walking past and then stopping. The camera is pointing to show someone's point of view. This shot then brings in some underground rap music, showing that the person watching her is listening to this. She walks and then stops and looks in the camera's direction. The screen goes black, she is not safe.

The girls ex boyfriend . He is put under cover to find the killer, forcing to be mixed in with the gang that killed his ex partner.
